Learn the Symptoms of Autism
Discussion on potential causes
The causes of autism are a matter of some debate. Likewise, autism spectrum disorders and their causes are also hard to pin down. In any case, autism is generally established to occur before a child is three years old, and involve problems with social interactions and communication skills. Causes have been ascribed to chemicals, heavy metals in the environment, and genetic factors. Another common theory involves the mercury found in some vaccinations, but this is a matter of debate since a clear link has not been shown, and unvaccinated children also become autistic, in addition to being susceptible to some dangerous childhood diseases. Related conditions like Asperger syndrome may have the same causes as autism.
Some known causes of autism involve genetics, as evidenced by the condition in some twins and related family members. Genetic causes are also difficult to pin down, since multiple factors may be involved. Other potential causes (and anecdotal ideas) involve exposure to diesel exhaust, fire retardants, smoking, alcohol, drugs, prenatal stress, PCBs, and pesticides. With the amount of research and attention being given to autism, plus better diagnosis of the condition, the causes should be found which will allow people to prevent autism and remove whatever environmental factors that may contribute to it.
Notes and Special Information
Special note: Make sure you get a diagnosis from a trained professional if you think your child has autism. There could be other factors in play, and there may be treatments that are very different than those used to treat autistic children and adults. Don't be afraid to consult with multiple doctors, since some conditions diagnosed as autism can be successfully treated.
